A Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system has been under development in Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory (HCL). QKD is a method for sharing, between a pair of legitimate persons, a secret key string to encode/decode a text to be shared. The security of QKD is ensured by the principle of Quantum Mechanics, so it is in principle unbreakable by an eavesdropper at any cost. The QKD system in HCL is designed for use of distributing the key via optical fibre, thus adopts the differential phase shift coding method as a key coding method together with a faint-laser as a light source. The method has an advantage in being free from unheralded jumping of phase of the light traveling down the fibre.
